About Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF)

The Ludo game was initiated in Uganda by the Indian coolies who were in the country to construct the Uganda railway line, its development has been gradual but significantly socially also acknowledgeable which later in 1988 raised a concern to form a unifying body. After realizing the pressing need to unite as ludo players for a common cause, YMCA ludo clubs were formed in 1990 by founder members, ULF it is, therefore, significant remarked that ludo clubs started from YMCA Kampala Branch.

In 2001, the game registered with the National Council of Sports (NCS) the governing sports body entrusted by the government of the Republic of Uganda which recognized the valuable and respectable sport in Uganda under the trusteeship of Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF) which has developed and still developing the sport/game to greater heights. It should be noted that Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF) was registered on 18th February 2001 after presenting the required credentials to the National Council of Sports (NCS) under the guidance of the by then General Secretary Mr. John Odyeke.

After a period of time, the game had deepened its roots nationally through the respective ULF clubs and districts. And so there was need to launch the ludo logo, the colorful launching ceremony was officiated by Ow’ekitiibwa Herbert Ssemakula –Sports Minister –Buganda government as the chief guest on 26th October, 2008 at YMCA Kampala Branch.

The Ludo game is not only stationed in Uganda but even across borders. The International Ludo Federation (I.L.F) is the International governing body with its headquarters situated in New Dheri-India to which Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF) subscribed to as an affiliate member following the authorization and clearance of the National Council of Sports (NCS) for Uganda. The federation (ULF) is an affiliate ludo member to International Ludo Federation (I.L.F) and Africa Ludo Federation (A.L.F) respectively.

ULF Goal

To impart on local communities knowledge and skills for the improvement of social, economic, cultural and political life of sports fraternity in Uganda.

ULF Objectives

  • To represent Uganda in international events through the official permission from the National Council of Sports (NCS) thus upholds the country’s flag.
  • To participate in international ludo competitions thus to win various awards for Uganda. In order to improve its image internationally.
  • To unite youth and persons of advanced age (the elderly) through the mind sports ability challenging and capacity building programs.
  • To instill commendable discipline among the players so as to improve the corporate image of Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF).
  • To foster and promote unity among the youth through organized inter-competition events at district, club and national levels.
  • To promote the interest and raise the standard of the game in the country.
  • To initiate social interact groups (munno mukabi groups) which help clubs and ULF membership in times of need and at times act as income-generating projects/activities.
  • To act as a recreation program for the public especially the youth in order for them not to indulge/engage in illegal acts, intentions or anti-social behaviors that may drive them into trouble (in other wards the Federation pays attention to morals development and uplifting).
  • To help the youth to develop into good and disciplined leaders who are accountable and transparent for quality service delivery.

ULF Leadership Structure Categories

Uganda Ludo Federation (ULF)’s leadership structure is in three categories namely:

  • The Club Executive Committee (C.E.C) which comprise of nine (9) members democratically elected by clubs to govern them for a period laid down in the constitution of ULF.
  • The District Executive Committee (N.E.C) comprises of leaders from various clubs found in that particular district plus the mobilizers this committee is entrusted with the duty to instill good leadership at district level.
  • The National Executive Committee (N.E.C) is the supreme leadership organ of the Federation elected in the delegates’ conference after a period of three (3) years term of office. The committee stands a chance to a vote of no confidence if it does not perform to the expectations of the electorates.

ULF Programs and Activities

The programs and activities conducted on an annual basis include the following tournaments which are actively participated in by all ludo clubs and districts without fail as indicated on the annual program calendar of ULF:

  • The National super league
  • National ludo championship
  • Ludo league one (1)
  • Women ludo league.
  • Inter district competitions.
  • Inter schools competitions.
  • Individual championship for both men and women.
  • Inter regional competition
